The first walk at the Torii Pass in 2023

I have planned to walk the Torii Pass several times since the opening of 2023, but I haven’t been able to do so yet. Over the last two months, we had three snowfalls, and I learned that the Torii Pass had almost 50 cm of snow at the top. I was slightly concerned because some foreign visitors are already walking the Nakasendo. I have to go check it out!

Snowfall at the entrance of the hiking path. I kept walking, but I couldn’t see the cobbles, because the pavement was covered with snow.

The Ontake shrine at the top.

I was fortunate to have a view of Mt. Ontake under clear cloud-free skies.

Approximately 20 cm of snow on the path to the Torii Pass.

Going down to Narai. This section suffered serious damage because of last year’s heavy rains. It was really slippery with the compacted snow. I can tell that so many people have already been walking.

The Narai-Juku as usual. I watch the direction of the city center from Shimomachi section, in front of the Minshuku Ikariya.
